Organic Dairy Farmers

Over the next few days I will be on a tour of inspection, tasting and comparing organic milk, with milk from some 22 farms participating in the inaugural ‘Remarkable Milk Awards’. I’ll be joined by a number of other interested parties, as we gather at the Abbotsford Convent. The visitation to the convent will be fascinating in its own right. More of that next week, - after the tastings.

Our youngest wine region

To New England as we spotlight two wines from Toppers Mountain. These are well worth visiting,- such as the 2009 Toppers Mountain Red Earth Child and the 2011 Toppers Mountain Petit Manseng Distribution is on display from select retailers and restaurants. These are new ones on me, but from all reports and following my tasting I can understand why these are regarded as quality wines which have been well awarded and trophy winners. The Petit Manseng has its origins in the south of France. No wonder why it is well regarded. The Earth Child comes in at $38 and the Petit Manseng at $34. Both wines have the ‘grown in the New England’ banner.

Tasmania

Tassie is the ‘in’ location at this time of the year. Springtime for birdwatchers. This is one of the best bird watching spots around the nation. Particularly if you happen to be on Bruny Island. For more information go visit www.bien.org.au

Mudgee is the magic word in wines
I first came across the wine growing region of Mudgee about 30 years ago.  I've been part of the territory  for a long time, following the progress of winemaking  Mudgee style for all those years.  The region surprises at each turn of the road.    It's time I returned. All because of a lovely drop from Eloquesta, - A Shiraz Petit Verdot 2009.  The wine is first class, and so too is the history which ranges from delightful villages to tales aplenty by Henry Lawson.  It is also home to the Loaded dog.  Ask the locals to show you the site of Lawson's brilliantly written story of a dog, a kerosene tin and two villains whose prank backfired.  Best told over a glass or two of that  Eloquesta Shiraz Petit Verdot  2009.

It may be just a few stragglers bringing up the rear guard in the Olympic city with the Games schedule drawing to a close. The Scots believe that now is the time for them to make the move and switch the attention to Edinburgh and their long list of festivals. We are in festive mode right now and right now is the best time to see Edinburgh. At least that's my thinking. Can't do much about the weather but that should not deter. The mighty theatre organ

300 artists gather together

Look for a switched on insurance broker
Those under 70 can just file this report away until that magical age change occurs.  Try going overseas and looking for insurance. It's all there, but what a fright also waits.  I've been checking on insurance and sorry to say that the best deal which is on offer, so my insurance man suggests, -go find a good broker and that should help out when looking for OS cover.      Whatever you do, please PLEASE make sure you do have insurance.       

Kapunda - home of the best German cake in the country.

Well, that's my story anyhow.  This product has been produced for at least 50 years and whilst the South Australian town has been struggling to keep sales figures up of recent time' I would think that their new production base of nearby Kapunda, they'll be looking after my interests next time I'm in Kapunda.  I vote this German product will  do well over yet another 50 years.

I fist visited Castlemaine back in 1963, as the host of a TV series (yep, in the black and white days).  More recently just a week ago.  Then, I called in to check on dining options.  I was most impressed with one restaurant in particular.  Full makes to  Alexander Perry. This young chef has turned the town upside down.  So good, I will return. It does under the name of The Good Table.  Local produce to the fore.  Served  Tapas style, so  share if the sensible approach.  Should your dining partner prefer to be boring and prefer to go solo, then he/she can be catered for.   Bookings recommended.

DID YOU KNOW ?

SOMEONE obviously forgot to tell a group of Australian holidaymakers aboard the world's highest-rated boutique passenger vessel earlier this month that we're supposed to be tightening our economic belts – Aussies were the biggest group by nationality and made up more than a quarter of all passengers on a sailing aboard the maximum-112 guest SeaDream I from Rome's Civitavecchia to Venice.

With a total of just 100 guests and 95 crew on this sailing, Australians numbered 26, followed by 18 from Brazil, 14 the UK, 12 Norway, 11 the USA and with the remainder from various other countries.

SeaDream Yacht Club's President, Bob Lepisto said he wasn't surprised at Aussie's outnumbering all others aboard the Civitavecchia-Venice sailing. "Since 2003 Australians have jumped from under one per cent of our guests, to now close to 10 per cent annually on SeaDream I and SeaDream II," he said.

Maybe its because all 5-star gourmet dining, wines with lunches and dinners, and that drinks from the open bars are included in the price, together with nightly cocktail gatherings, use of a 30-course golf simulator, power and sail watersports (in ports where permitted,) mountain bikes for shore excursions, and even onboard gratuities.

A big surprise at Kulpara
Where the heck is Kulpara I hear you say! I came across this tiny town with the magnificent postcode of 5555. From what I could see, there is only a handful of abodes that make up this village.. That, plus the location which is home to one of the best coffee shop on tap. Mark and Vicki Lomman are mine hosts.  Their business also supports a corner store (without the corner), once a school (or was it originally a church). Check them out.  Also they offer the passing traffic laser and Etching services.  Should you be travelling that way sometime in the future, telephone (08) 8827 3228. I just had to stop en route to the Yorke Peninsula to check out this unique coffee 'stop'.
 
It's not only wine here
On my recent tour of the Barossa, I was able to fill in some of my holiday time playing croquet on the green at Chateau Tanunda. To book your spot on the green,  telephone (08) 8563 3888. After all this sport, go grab a Hutton Vale lamb or a beef pie.  Almost as famous as the Charles Melton's  fine Barossa red wine.
 
Augurs well for skiing season
My good friend Ian Talbot reports that as from July 8 there may be some difficulty in targeting accommodation on the mountain.  If you are quick, there is currently a window of opportunity prior to the busy busy season.  Should you just be interested a wee bit, make the call and  'chuck a snowie'.

Having spent half a dozen visits to Sovereign Hill in Ballarat, there were around two years between most recent visits. I never tire of strolling the streets of the 1851 gold fields. On this particular visit I had the opportunity to spend a night in the very comfortable Comfort Inn Sovereign Hill, the four-star property which places you just footsteps from the entry to the recreated gold town which is set on 25 hectares. The highlight of my stay was to participate in the Blood on the Southern sound and light show. This was a first class presentation. A visit to Sovereign Hill would be incomplete should you get really involved. Whilst Sovereign Hill is he bg drawcard when visiting Ballarat, there is plenty more to include in your visit. Lake Wendouree welcomes you.- after a lengthy drought, it has again been returned to its original charm, go visit and take a walk around its perimeter. Either before, or following your walk, I can recommend a coffee, or lunch at Masons Cafe. Viv Mason offers seasonal organic product. Check the blackboard. Back in the cbd

Yes, the cbd is next on my 'must visit' list, to visit the Art Gallery of Ballarat. This is the oldest regional art gallery of regional Australia. Sinclair of Scotsburn

If you are into wines, there are plenty of wineries, cellar doors and the like. I chose one on the outskirts of Ballarat, one which calls Buninyong 'home'. Mine host loves his very own Pinot, I spotted a Chardonnay. It was superb If I heard right, Mr Halliday thought likewise. I suggest that to get directions from Buninyong would be the wise thing to do. You could do no better than to have a coffee or a snack, at Espresso Depot. Part of early history and so friendly too. OK, here'es the drill.
